Objectives:

To develop high figure-of-merit LC mixtures
for laser beam steering.

To invent polarization-independent LC phase modulators for laser beam steering.

To develop new LC gel for high-speed optical phased array.
Accomplishments:

Developed fast-response and scattering-free polymer network liquid crystals
and LC gels for infrared light modulators.
-
Demonstrated
a fast-response light switch using a sheared polymer network
liquid crystal.
-
Invented an axially-symmetric sheared polymer
network liquid crystal for simultaneously measuring the phase retardation and
optic axis of uniaxial phase compensation films.
